John McCain has fought many heroic battles for this country. Now, he's fighting back against what he calls a "smear campaign". A New York Times article out claims that McCain may have had an inappropriate relationship with a female lobbyist. While the article never implicity says the two had a romantic relationship, there are comments that some of McCain's inner circle at the time tried to keep the woman away. Even if there were no romantic ties, just the implication that McCain had done favors for a lobbyist could sully a reputation built back up from when the Arizona senator was crushed in the S& L crisis a few decades ago. What I find interesting here is the timing of the article. I'm sure there are conservative Republicans out there who think that had this piece come out back in December, there would never have been the comeback McCain staged through the early primaries.
