Property Taxes Special Session

The Florida Legislature began a special session Tuesday aimed at lowering property taxes, but some lawmakers are concerned the current proposal will take too much money away from education.

The plan is expected to cut $31.6 billion from property tax rolls over the next five years.

Republicans said 73 percent of homeowners would see a reduction on their property tax bills. The average cut would amount to about $1,500 a year.

Democrats agree local governments must trim their spending, but Senator Steven Geller warns this proposal will cost public education nearly $2 billion a year and threaten local services.

Do you think this plan will work?

My husband and I own a home in unincorporated Palm Beach County. We built it in 1986; we were blessed with the SOH cap in 1993; however, even with taxes going up at max of 3%; we now have a $4500 prop tax bill on a 20 year old home. Even with the proposed tier style SOH exemption our taxes would go up $200 per year if we did not have the "grandfather clause" available. We are still paying more than our current tax bill for Property Insurance through a private insuror [Citizens would have charged us $8700 if we had not shopped around when our "carrier of 20 years abandoned the state on March 1, 2007 - the common thread here is that they took our payments, we never made a claim because it was always below the 2% deductible; what a shame on them!]. The legislature still does not get it; the counties do not get it; but I will actively find alternatives at all levels at election time if legislation and constitutional amendments do not produce results. My husband has been on social security for 8 years and I still have to work very hard for 2-3 more years to be able to have any kind of retirement. We would not qualify for the "seniors higher exemption for low income" because of my job. Jupiter FL 33458

Perhaps we should use our tax savings to purchase a firearm, fire extinguisher and a first aid kit so that the loss of services won't hurt so badly. Who in their right mind would even consider reducing taxes at the expense of public services? The scary thing is that we voted those bozo's into office. I can not wait for election day!

I Think scraping the save our homes tax is a trick so in time we will be paying more property tax , My property tax right now is only $1400.00 but my home owners insurance went up this year 3400.00 so what in 5 years I will be paying $3000.00 for property tax and $6000.00 for home owners inurance. How about lower home owners Insurance rates and leave the property tax alone before both are too high

VOTE "NO."

A village idiot can see this latest property tax "relief" proposal is NOT what was initially proposed as an elimination of HOMESTEAD property taxes. Adopting an alternative real estate tax without a reliable cap is setting yourself for lots of pain.

VOTE "NO."

VOTE NO.

Under this new "tax relief" proposal, once you select to eliminate your 3% annual tax increase cap you can NEVER go back to HOMESTEAD status EVEN IF YOU RELOCATE. In other words, if you ever buy a larger home you will wind up fighting potentially massive annual tax increases without the protection of the 3% cap. That's hell. These lawmakers must think we're a bunch of knuckleheads to even propose such horrible potential circumstances. This proposal would actually decrease Florida property values further and cause 144%+ increases in real estate foreclosures. What devil person is presenting this as a value?

VOTE NO.

The Super Exemption does nothing more then create short term relief for the property owner and potential long term headache and duress. I'm pretty sure I'll stick with my current high tax bill and 'safe' 3 percent appreciation cap.

Keep this very important fact in mind: In 10 years, Florida's population increased my an average of 12 percent while tax revenues at every level grew by a minimum of 2 to 4 times across the board. We are talking about hundreds of billions of our dollars. The windfall 'profits' and waste must stop. This new plan stinks.

It looks to me as if this Super plan will be great until about 2013 when the new assessed value becomes higher than the SOH assessed value. Then we will be paying higher taxes again. In the long run the old system will save me more tax money. I am going to stay with the SOH system if we have a choice.

What kind of a cockamamie tax cut proposal is this? It appears to be more involved than the IRS withholding tax laws. Can't anyone come up with a simple, easy way to give Florida residents and property owners a break? Moving to another state is becoming more and more appealing to me. That is, if I can find a sucker to buy my house in Florida!

Please vote NO!!!!!

Don't VOTE "NO or YES" ... the creeps that are pitching this tax "relief" will write the proposal so "NO" actually means "YES". BE SURE TO READ THE PROPOSAL AT THE VOTING BOOTH BEFORE YOU VOTE "YES OR NO."

I'm really tired of being conned by "over-credentialed professional" creeps representing themselves to decent citizens their "advocates" as they try to screw us. Just exactly what have 3,500+ men and women died for over seas? To protect this crap on the HOMELAND. Looks like these "respectable" terrorists should be dealt with first.

This level of "D.A. NIFONG" unethical devious and corrupt behavior is destroying our country.

VOTE "YES OR NO" depending on how this criminal creeps pitch this "three card monte scam" to Floridians.

VOTE YES OR NO - READ IT FIRST.

It's time for SUPER NANNY to step in because this new plan is for the crying babies in the legislaturer that that just want it their way and hate that we the people finally caught on to them. As my dad always said corner a rat and see what they do (go crazy). The government works for us .They act like it's their money. They're so protective over our money so why don't they act that way when they're spending it? Spending someone eleses money is more fun than I can image. Unlimited funds is for the Rich and Famous .We're just average people working to pay our homeowners insurance 4,800 plus these crazy taxes because the government knows what's better for us. WHO DO YOU WORK FOR? Even if you said sell and more somewhere you could afford ;good luck no IDIOT would buy knowing between HOA insurance and taxes you'd be paying more than your mortage payment. Florida doesn't warrant that, the pay scale doesn't match but if your work for the government and rip the people off then ok. You're going to have to beg and steal to survive here. How stupid can government be ? If things don't change people will have to LIVE OFF THE GOVERNMENT and that will long term cost more. ---------HELP US TO HELP OURSELVES!-------------------

idiots, they have accomplished nothing. They need to keep it simple, a maximum 1% property rate, tax businesses on current use, increase sales tax and user fees a bit to make up the difference. People settled in Florida because it was affordable, weather was secondary. The evidence of this is clear because people are not moving here-school enrollment is down etc. Nothing these so called leaders show they have a clue. Same with insurance
