Post-Election Notes
Shuttling up and down Clematis Street on election night, I got to see the full range of emotions from the two candidates for West Palm Beach mayor. With the results not known until late in the evening... and with those early numbers apparently wrong, it was quite the roller coaster. I saw City Commissioner Kimberly Mitchell approach Al Zucaro around 10:30 and say "So? And?" and Zucaro softly reply, "I guess we lost." Over at Frankel headquarters, initial hesitation gave way to jubilation. Before everything was settled, a spokesperson approached me and another reporter and asked if Lois should give her acceptance speech. Initially, she was going to go on live at 11 for all the local stations... but she went on earlier instead.
Other tidbits and questions... while "Four more years!" was a constant chant once the election was settled, at one point Frankel and a few others were chanting "We beat the Post!". The Palm Beach Post had endorsed Zucaro.
If you didn't have them before, are you starting to have your doubts over the safety and accuracy of the computer voting systems?
Will Bishop Thomas Masters be in the news more as Riviera Beach Mayor than he was as a community activist? Will he try and get the city's redevelopment moving again... or will he try to put the brakes on?
Will past power problems in Lake Worth be the biggest problem for Mayor Mark Drautz, who faces a runoff in 2 weeks?
In one community, age did not trump experience. Incumbent Palm Springs mayor John "Mike" Davis easily beat 24 year-old challenger Michael Peacock.
