Foley's Follies Lead To Hot Race

Mark Foley's fall from grace created one of the most interesting political races in 2006. The race for the 16th District seat in 2008 also looks like it will be a doozy. Democrat Tim Mahoney went from unknown contender to Congressman. With Joe Negron making a surprise decision not to engage in a rematch after a strong late charge in November, Gayle Harrell wants in. Harrell, who is serving her final term in the state legislature, told me when I profiled her last fall that she always had a desire to run for Congress. Now, she gets her chance. The odds are great that Harrell won't be alone in her bid. With a Republican majority in the 16th, others are likely to sense an opportunity.
